관계대명사

오늘은 관계대명사에 대해 알아보겠습니다.

 

 ● 관계대명사의 종류

	주격 (바로 뒤 동사)	소유격 (바로 뒤 명사 수식)	목적격 (뒤에 목적어가 없는 문장)
사람	who, that	whose	whom, that
사물	which, that	whose	which, that
선행사를 포함한 관계대명사	what	ㅡ	what

관계대명사절은 앞 명사를 수식하는 형용사 역할을 한다.

관계대명사의 형태는

첫째, 선행사가 사람인지 아닌지

둘때, 관계대명사안에서 관계대명사의 격이 무엇인지에 따라 결정된다.

 

 ■ 주격 관계대명사 : 바로 뒤에 동사가 나온다.

The movie is based on the documentary which was produced in the 1980s.

영화는 1980년대에 제작된 다큐멘터리에 기초하고 있다.

The movie is based on the documentary + The documentary was produced in the 1980s

(documentary를 수식하며 관계대명사절 주어 역할을 하는 which)

 

■ 소유격 관계대명사 : 바로 뒤의 명사를 수식한다.

The crowds gathered to see the Girls' Generation whose visit hit the headlines in local papers.

군중들은 소녀시대를 보려고 모여들었고, 그들의 방문은 지역 신문에 헤드라인으로 실렸다. 

The crowds gathered to see the Girls' Generation + Girls' Generation's visit hit the headlines in local papers.

(선행사인 Girls' Generation을 수식하며, 관계대명사절에서 vistit을 수식하는 whose)

 

 

■ 목적격 관계대명사 : 뒤에 주어와 동사가 나오며, 관계사절에서 목적어 역할을 하므로 뒤에 따로 목적어가 없다.

The discount coupon that purchasers recieve with their first order is valid for a month.

구매자들이 첫 주문과 함께 받은 쿠폰은 한달 동안 유효하다.

Purchasers recieve a discount coupon with their first order + The discount coupon is valid for a month.

(receive의 목적어 역할을 하는 that)

 

 

● 관계대명사의 생략

1. 목적격 관계 대명사는 생략 가능하다.
   1) The architect showed officials a floor plan of the airport he designed (=that he designed).
   2) Busan Bank customers are requested to update annually the passwords they use for onllne banking(=that they use for online banking).
    
2. '주격 관계대명사 + be동사'의 생략 : 주격 관계대명사 자체만은 생략할 수 없지만, '주격 관계대명사 + be동사'는 생략가능하다.
   이때, 현재부사 또는 과거분사가 와서 능동태와 수동태의 축약 구조를 이룬다.(목적어가 있으면 능동태~ing, 없으면 수동태 p.p.)
   1) Dr.Cho leading(=who is leading) the academy has recently awarded from the mayor.
   2) It will take at least 4 years to restore the historic palace damaged(that was damaged) by a big fire. 

★that은 선행사가 사람과 사물일 때 모두 사용가능하며, 뒤에 불완전한 절을 이끔.

   하지만, 콤마 뒤와 전치사 뒤에는 관계대명사 that을 쓸 수 없다.

1) The office is near the bus stop, [that/which] makes daily commuters easy.

2) There was a retirement celebration of Jasper for [that/whom] employees have great respect.
